Callon Petroleum has built an enviable Permian platform beginning in 2009 from the beginning of a strategic, just-in-time Gulf of Mexico exit. With another move in 2019, it added armor to its Permian vest and bolted on an Eagle Ford holding.

Colorado’s drillable land mass is shrinking. DAPL’s in court again. On the natgas front, Appalachia’s daily outbound is estimated to be able to grow by only another 2 Bcf. That leaves all other oil and natgas producers—and their shippers’ financiers—to pick up the slack.
The southern, gassy Eagle Ford was left for better natgas-price days, which are here now. The fairway is further advantaged by pipe buildout deep into Mexico that has more than 6 Bcf/d going south of the border.

The U.S. is exporting some 20 Bcf/d of natgas—a figure that grew in 2020 while oil demand declined. Of exports, roughly half is exiting to Mexico and Texas’ Gulf Coast LNG terminals. Here’s the outlook for yet more demand to come.

It was a nationwide spectacle and even drew international attention—and it was deadly: Texas didn’t have enough natgas in mid-February. ERCOT didn’t know gas producers and shippers need electricity; ERCOT had shut them down. A veteran gas analyst explains here.

The southern Midland offers a dial-a-hydrocarbon portfolio of rock. The far northern Midland delivers nearly all black gold. And the conventional Strawn on the Eastern Shelf is making nice wells when giving it horizontals.
